September 21, 2002 - Glenn Gould

This segment is about famed pianist Glenn Gould, who may have had Asperger's Syndrome. Aspergers, a condition related to autism, can make people hyper-sensitive to their environment. This may also explain his constant humming while he performed. An interesting look at a brilliant musician.

June 19, 2002 - Autism and Education

Because the number of children with autism has risen sharply in the recent years, there is an urgent need to research the best teaching methods. On Morning Edition, Larry Abramson reports on emerging strategies for educating children with mild forms of autism. (12:30)

March 27, 2001Autism Therapies

NPR's Patricia Neighmond reports many parents of autistic children are experimenting with treatments for autism and working to speed up research on the disorder. (12:30)

April 06,2000 All Things Considered Autism

There appears to be a rise in the number of children being diagnosed with autism. This neurobiological disorder can interfere with a child's ability to communicate, learn and fit in with others. A growing number of parents who care for these children believe that vaccines are to blame for the disorder, and went to Capitol Hill today to testify before a House committee. NPR's Michelle Trudeau and Vicky Que report on the vaccine connection to autism (there's no credible scientific evidence linking vaccines to autism), and the research into other possible causes, such as genetics. (12:30)

Announcing a Special Issue of JASH The Journal of the Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps. The Fall, 1999 Issue of JASH is devoted to Interventions for Young Children with Autism. The purpose of this special issue is to highlight a range of best practices in educational interventions. Rather than attempting to demonstrate that one approach is more or less effective than the others, this issue advocates that we consider the strengths and contributions of varied approaches so that we may discover what works best for individual children and their families. This is refreshing and welcome message during this current period of intense educational debate in the field of autism.
